Readers may also be interested in the writings home from the front of US Sgt. Sam Avery during the Great War (World War I). Fascinating eyewitness history from the hot sands along the Rio Grande to the cold mud along the Meuse.

This blog is an adventure long in the making for me in honor of my own family hero. Letters are posted on the same day they were written from the trenches 91 years ago. Today I found myself staring at my watch counting down the minutes to 1100 hrs.

Long before the Greatest Generation there was the Most Gallant Generation. Stop by and come march along...

I must say I love the graphic at the top of your post. Well crafted. I am looking forward to seeing the movie and probably concluding with you that the book was better.

Most entertaining. We have an oak tree which is popular with all the squirrels in the neighbourhood. They like to tease our two cats by flicking their tails as they dart up and down for another tasty morsel of acorn.

I LOVE this posting. I totally agree that football (or any sports program for that matter) will always win the battle against the books. That's why homework gets sent in in the form of a note- "We had football practice so we didn't have time to do the work." Um... since when is not having time the same thing as not MAKING time? Keep preachin'!

Jim,
When you talk about choosing between kill and drill and life-long readers, I totally agree. Unfortunately, in many places -- including some districts around here -- it's not a choice. Tests have become so important, especially for schools in their third and sometimes fourth years as "unsatisfactory" on AYP, that just about everything gets sacrificed on that bubble grid shaped altar. Until testing is abandoned -- not changed, abandoned -- we won't see any real progress on that front. What's tested is what is given time. I don't feel optimistic about that change coming anytime soon because the people who care in general aren't high enough up the food chain in large enough numbers to make a difference.
